Dr Alexis Kyriacou has obtained his undergraduate degree (BSc(Hons)) in Dietetics at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UK). At the same time, he successfully completed his placements in NHS hospitals in England and Wales. During his placements he covered wards and outpatient clinics including those of diabetes, oncology, gastroenterology, and weight management and other related metabolic diseases. He also managed on a daily basis, patients requiring nutritional support i.e. oral, enteral and parenteral feeding. Subsequently, he was registered with the health care professional Council (hcpc) in the UK with the title of Registered Dietitian (RD) and becoming one of the few dietitians in Cyprus receiving both his theoretical and practical training in the UK.
Thereafter, he obtained the qualification ‘Post-experience Certificate in Diabetes’ followed by a Master degree in Diabetes in Glasgow (Scotland, UK). Finally, Dr Kyriacou has completed a PhD degree at the University of Stirling (Scotland, UK) under the supervision of Professor Dr Josie Evans; the main interest of his PhD study was the subject of nutrition in patients with diabetes.
Dr Kyriacou has published widely in well-respected international peer-reviewed scientific journals, and has presented at numerous international meetings in Cyprus and the UK, various topics, such as nutrition and dietetics, diabetes, obesity, Mediterranean diet, pregnancy, and thyroid disease. Currently, he is involved in a number of research projects. Furthermore, he has published articles in the public press on various subjects.
Dr Kyriacou has a strong interest in education and in January 2022 he was awarded Honorary Lecturer at University of Stirling, where he teaches and supervises postgraduate students. Furthermore, since September 2012, he has been working as a visiting lecturer in Cyprus College Limassol, where he teaches Dietetics. Additionally, he has been invited to give a number of lectures and seminars for the general public and patients e.g. for people with diabetes, cancer patients, people with kidney problems and patients who underwent transplantation.
Dr Kyriacou currently practices at CEDM Centre of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism in Limassol, with a special interest in clinical nutrition and dietetics, and the dietetic (dietary) management of diabetes. He is also a diabetes educator, providing structured education in patients with Type 1 diabetes, and initiating insulin pumps. He is a registered dietitian in the UK (hcpc) and in Cyprus (ΣΕΕΤΤΔ) and a professional member of the British Dietetic Association (BDA), the DiabetesUK and the European Association for the study of Diabetes (EASD) and other local and international associations.
